On 28th September 2010, Dr. Geoffrey Cahn, a historian teaching at Yeshiva University High School for Boys in New York City, visited our school in order to lead a workshop called "Post-Holocaust Reconciliation Project". The program Mr. Cahn offers at several Berlin schools is intended to inform about Jewish life in Germany today as well as to share knowledge about the Shoah and reflect on ways of confronting that dark spot in German history.

The interdisciplinary workshop was attended by some 90 senior grade students from English and History courses.

First, Dr. Cahn summed up his personal experience as a child of German Holocaust survivors in a vivid lecture. Mr. Cahn told us that it took himself until 1996 to first visit his father's home country. He toured Germany in his parents' footsteps, going to the town of Krefeld, where his family originally lived, and visiting several concentration camp memorials. Also during that journey, he exchanged thoughts on his own so-far biography with people of different age groups.

After a break, we discussed several newspaper articles highlighting different aspects within the topics of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.

"At the Gift Shop: Souvenirs of Buchenwald", for instance, deals with the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial's plan of selling souvenirs thoughtfully designed by Bauhaus students.

Finally, the discussion merged into a debate including questions like: What could we as individuals do to build bridges between different religious and ethnic groups? And what can we do to reduce prejudice and fight racism in the 21st century?
